First Things First

Internet and cellphone service is inexpensive compared to plans in the US. For example, unlimited calls, text, and 5G data in Ireland, plus EU roaming calls, text and 23GB of data per month, and Wi-fi Calling throughout the globe for €14.99. There are a few providers that offer similar plans for as low as €12.99.

Ireland has a highly developed digital infrastructure. The National Broadband Plan (NBI) is actively rolling out fiber to rural areas, covering 96% of the land mass over a seven-year period and fortunetly our property is already covered. Nearly 70 providers offer service on the same fiber, so swtching providers or upgrading speed is not an issue. Speeds from 500Mb to 5Gbps are available.

Costs: Fiber broadband deals in Ireland start around €40 per month for high-speed (1Gbps), unlimited packages. Deals are easy to find and compare at sites like switcher.ie or bonkers.ie , which also allows you to search for deals with electricity, loans, credit cards , sim only plans, etc.

March 7, 2026, an installation appointment was scheduled online for 1Gbps Internet service for March 20, 2026.

March 9, 2026, I recieved an email that stated “In attempting to install your service our field technicians encountered an issue which will require additional civil engineering work to be carried out.” Don’t know if that means more poles or digging, or what…… More to follow.

March 11, 2026, Good news, no extra poles and no digging. Just had to run the fiber down the road, with no extra charge, as installation is free. New scheduled install date of March 19, 2026.

March 19, 2026, installed complete. Despite the rural location, this is the first and only home I have been able to have fiber installed.

  1. High speed sounds good enough to keep my PvP rate high. Kudos for the move. Looking forward to updates. I’ve got to bid a SNN trip. ~Will & Avril
